Why Some People Sleep with a Leg Outside the Sheets

Many people have unique bedtime habits, from favorite pillows to sleeping in complete darkness. One common habit stands out—sticking a foot out from under the sheets. Surprisingly, science explains why this simple action can improve sleep and overall health. This habit is linked to regulating body temperature.

María José Martínez, coordinator of the Chronobiology group at the Spanish Sleep Society, explains that to sleep, the body must release internal heat through vasodilation. Blood vessels in the hands and feet expand, allowing heat to escape. This cooling process helps the body prepare for deep sleep.

Babies show this naturally: their ears and noses turn warm as they release heat. Similarly, exposing a foot at night helps adults lower internal temperature, signaling that it’s time to rest. To improve sleep further, consider evidence-based habits recommended by experts: stick to a regular sleep schedule, aim for seven to eight hours nightly, and maintain a cool, dark, and quiet bedroom.

Avoid heavy meals before bedtime, limit long daytime naps, exercise earlier in the day, and manage worries to maintain mental calm. Sticking a foot out of the sheets may seem small, but it reflects the body’s natural need to cool down and prepare for rest. Combined with healthy sleep habits, this simple practice can enhance sleep quality, energy, and overall well-being.
