The Final Sobriety Test

A police officer stopped a man late one night after noticing his car drifting slightly between lanes. Believing the driver might be intoxicated, the officer asked him to step out of the vehicle and perform a series of sobriety tests. The man agreed without argument and followed every instruction carefully.

The officer began with the standard tests. The driver walked a straight line, balanced on one foot, and even recited the alphabet backward. Much to the officer’s surprise, the man completed each challenge successfully. Still suspicious, the officer decided to give him one final test.

“I’ll make this simple,” the officer said. “Use the words green, pink, and yellow in a single sentence. If you can do that, I’ll let you go.” The officer was certain the unusual request would finally expose whether the man was impaired.

The driver paused for only a second before smiling. “The traffic light turned green, green, green, so I pinked up the phone and said, ‘Yellow, who’s calling?’” The answer was so unexpected that the officer had to repeat it in his head before realizing the driver had cleverly worked all three words into one sentence.

The officer burst out laughing and admitted he had never heard that response before. Satisfied that the driver was alert, quick-thinking, and fully capable of continuing safely, he sent him on his way. The unusual exchange became one of the funniest stories the officer would tell for years afterward.
